On Sunday, December 1 at 2 p.m., the Frederick Cook Society will present live music with Donna and Rick Nestler. Donna and Rick are Hurleyville, New York residents who have been touring the US and Australia for more than twenty years, performing their unique blend of blues, folk, old timey and Tin Pan Alley pop. The duo features Grammy award winner Rick Nestler on 12 string guitar and vocals, and Donna Nestler on concertina, banjolele and vocals.
Besides performing, Rick is a songwriter who wrote the famous Hudson River Anthem, “ The River that Flows Both Ways.” When Pete Seeger heard the song he liked it so much he recorded it on his Grammy award winning CD, “Tomorrow‘s Children.”
Donna Nestler is classically trained in flute, bassoon and guitar, but she plays the banjolele. The banjolele is a four-stringed instrument with a small banjo body and a fretted ukulele neck. Donna has traveled the world performing, teaching and convincing people that “banjoleles rule”.
Donna and Rick have been fortunate to play with some very fine musicians, among them Pete Seeger, Tom Chapin, Jay Unger & Molly Mason, Bill Vanaver, Hope Machine, Mike & Ruthy and Abbie Gardner.
Little Sparrow (Aldo Troiani and Carol Smith) will host the event and open the show, performing rock and folk songs of the sixties and seventies.
The concert, which is sponsored by the Frederick Cook Society, will take place at the Sullivan County Museum, 265 Main Street, Hurleyville, New York,12747. Call 845 434-8044 for more info or visit the Sullivan County Historical Society website at www.scnyhistory.org.
