Sharon Thorpe, associate curator of the Sullivan County Historical Society, is installing the finishing touches on a new exhibit at the Sullivan County Museum, in Hurleyville, NY. She gathered authentic materials spanning two centuries of life in Sullivan County, bringing vivid descriptions of specific eras. Her intent is to show life in a time before modern conveniences became available.
Sharon has volunteered at the Sullivan County Historical Society for many years creating exhibits in different areas of interest. The current work is a loving effort to put forward vignettes of times of long gone up to the 1930's. Time spent with old things point forward to our own time when connections are made in each person’s own experiences. Each exhibit corner holds different clues to how people lived during that era. The contrast to modern life is startling.
The Opening of “Early Sullivan County” will be held Sunday, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sullivan County Museum, 265 Main Street, Hurleyville, NY. Sullivan County Historian, John Conway, will speak on “Transitions: The Major Changes in Early Sullivan County History .” A musical presentation will follow by “Dirty Stay Out Skifflers” performing tunes from the early 1800's through the mid 1900's.
