A pioneer American Polar explorer, Dr. Cook spent two decades in expeditions to both Polar regions and subarctic Alaska between 1891 and 1909. Many authorities acknowledge him as the discoverer of the geographical North Pole in 1908. He was the first American to spend forced winters in both the Antarctic and the Arctic and is credited with saving the "Belgica" expedition to the South Polar regions in 1897-99.
In 1906 his first reported ascent of Alaska's Mt. McKinley (which he was the first to circumnavigate in 1903) was accepted until a bitter controversy arose in late 1908 about Cook's claim to having reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908. Cook was knighted by the King of the Belgians, honored by geographical societies and authored five books about his experiences.

The General Store was the commercial center of town and the primary place you would sell/purchase goods and collect your mail. Much like a Walmart of the 1800's, just about anything you needed was available at the local general store. The Museum has an extensive collection of items you might find at one of these general stores on display.

Sullivan County Long Beards
Since the very earliest days of Sullivan County history, the county’s forests and streams have provided both sport and subsistence to outdoor enthusiasts. Over the years, the exploits of these sportsmen have been well chronicled, from the early writings of James Quinlan to the current essays of Sullivan County Historian, John Conway. Among the numerous sportsmen’s clubs throughout the county that share in this heritage, the Sullivan County Long Beards are true representatives. Chartered with the National Wild Turkey Federation, the local chapter has promoted, over the years, the involvement of outdoor activity through education and conservation. The sponsors of numerous programs, the
Sullivan County Long Beards are committed to passing on this heritage, as well as the preservation and improvement of habitat, for future generations.
