Sullivan County Historical Society’s First Sunday Concert will feature Little Sparrow!

For nearly ten years, the Americana band Little Sparrow (Aldo Troiani and Carol Smith) have been presenting live music at the Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville. Their first project, the Woodsongs Coffeehouse, was an evening series of concerts that ran for eight years. Notable guests included Thurman Barker and Trinity, the Inner Urge Trio, mandolinist Joe Walsh, guitarist Grant Gordy, the Coal Town Rounders, Eastlande, MiZ (Mike Mizwinski),and Louie Setzer and the Appalachian Mountain Boys.

Most recently Little Sparrow has been hosting a Sunday afternoon Music and History series, showcasing the talented residents of Sullivan County in a format that includes first person history and antidotes from the resort era and the fifties and sixties. Many of their guests performed in the Catskill Hotels, including Mickey Barnett, The Allen Brothers, Larry Ravdin, and Freddie Jacobs. The Johnny Jules band performed on Woodstock weekend, and entertained folks with great sixties music, and stories of the festival itself.

On February 2nd, at 2:)) PM for the first time, Little Sparrow will be the featured performer. Their music covers multiple genres, from bluegrass to sixties rock and rhythm and blues. They are not a traditional band, but rather more of a “collective” project, having performed with more than 20 different musicians from multiple genres during their ten year run. For the February show they will be joined by Jay Brooks on bass, and Bob on congas.  Jay is the art teacher at the Monticello High School, and Bob is a new resident in the County, relocated from ?

The concert is free, but we will be asking for donations to help fund our March First Sunday concert, when we bring back very special guitarist, Van Manakas. Van, who comes up from Montclair, New Jersey will be bringing his own jazz trio. The date for that show is Sunday, March 1st, at 2:00pm, so mark your calendars!

And if you enjoy live music, Aldo also hosts a radio show on Sullivan County’s community station WJFF.   Saturday, February 1st at 1:PM. the bluegrass band Oxford Depot will perform at the stations new Live Music series (wjjfradio.com).

The Sullivan County Museum is located at 265 Main Street, Hurleyville, New York. The event is free. Donations will be gratefully accepted.  Call 845 434-8044 for more info, or visit the website at www.scnyhistory.org.

Save the date- Saturday March 7 2 PM Catskill Readers Theater will be presenting a Women’s History Program in conjunction with March Women’s History month. More news to follow.
